5 Signs You Need to Weed Out Your Closet

Use these tips to pare down your closet!

Last month I was invited to Ikea of New Haven to put on a closet organizing workshop for one of their megastore events. That presentation sparked me to update this closet organizing post from 2016.

Here are 5 signs you need to weed out your closet:

1- You have more shoes than Facebook friends.

If your shoes are getting out of hand, it's time to weed them out! The loafers from your corporate job 10 years ago, the boots that always cause a blister, or the funky colored flats that match nothing in your wardrobe should all be reassessed. Time to unfriend them!

2- Your closet space is a size 4 but the size of your wardrobe is a size 14!

Is your closet suffering from muffin-top syndrome? Is every possible nook and cranny stuffed to the brim? There’s no doubt when you’ve reached this point, your clothes are looking wrinkly when you take them out, you can’t find what you need and you don’t know what you have.  It’s time to take it all out and assess your current size, style and season. Whatever doesn't make the cut doesn't go back!

3- It’s taking you longer than Florida Georgia Line's new hit to select an outfit.

This isn't "Meant to Be!" Time is precious, especially in the morning when you have to get out the door. If it’s taking you longer than a few minutes to put together an outfit you should dial in a new organizing system. Creating zones in your closet for shirts, dresses, pants, and jeans will help with locating items. Sorting by color from lightest to darkest will help you see where you have duplicates. Adding storage such as bins and baskets for scarves, bathing suits, and belts can maximize space.

4- You have more t-shirts than a Gap Store.

You have 50 t-shirts and counting. It's great to have multiples of your favorite article of clothing or even a small collection of the pieces you enjoy wearing, but having an overly excessive amount is not helpful. The saying goes "When everything is important, then nothing is." Pull out your favorites and liquidate the rest.

5- You haven’t worn it since the days of Desperate Housewives

The TV show Desperate Housewives ended in 2012. If you haven't worn an article of clothing since then, it's time to part with it. More often than not there's a reason why you keep passing over items in your closet (too itchy, too loose, baggy knees), so it's time to 'fess up and divorce it!

Are you guilty of one of these signs?!? Let me know in the comments!

And if you're interested in giving your closet a makeover, I'd highly recommend the Ikea PAX storage system - which is the product I highlighted during my in-store workshop. It's modular and completely customizable to your space.
