GO Month: Mental Clutter - P

Let's celebrate Get Organized (GO) Month by ridding ourselves of mental clutter from A to Z!

To celebrate Get Organized (GO) Month I'm doing a series of posts on the mental clutter that can be just as pervasive as physical clutter. For each letter, I'll talk about a mental stumbling block that often impacts our well-being.

Let's focus on P ... Priorities

Knowing how to prioritize can affect the success of your day, week, month, and even life. Setting priorities can be easier said than done especially when everything seems to be at the top of the list and is screaming for attention.

Setting priorities means the process by which you evaluate the importance and urgency of something whether that be a task, goal, project, event, etc.

Yet what oftentimes happens is that we get bogged down with competing priorities. We can feel overwhelmed, unfocused and end up spinning our wheels.

Ways to combat this issue include:

  • Capture everything on a 'master list' and then break it down by month, week, and day

  • When faced with your task list implement the 4 Ds - Do, Defer, Delegate, or Delete with each item

  • Use a priority matrix to determine importance vs urgency

  • Have no more than 3 MITs (Most Important Tasks) on your list each day

  • Use your most productive hours, whether that's in the morning or at night, and do your most important work then

"The key is not to prioritize what's on your schedule,

but to schedule your priorities."

Stephen Covey

Here's to freeing ourselves from competing priorities!

Please share with someone who needs a clearer mindset.
