GO Month: Mental Clutter - T

Let's celebrate Get Organized (GO) Month by ridding ourselves of mental clutter from A to Z!

To celebrate Get Organized (GO) Month I'm doing a series of posts on the mental clutter that can be just as pervasive as physical clutter. For each letter, I'll talk about a mental stumbling block that often impacts our well-being.

Let's focus on T ... Toxic Thoughts

Our own thoughts and emotions shape our experiences and if we're feeding ourselves poison most likely we're leading a pretty hopeless and unhappy existence. Having occasional negative thoughts is normal but when you orient your mindset around unhealthy thinking it can be quite destructive.

Some toxic thoughts you need to rid yourself of include:

The grass is always greener - appreciate the grass you have, you own it, so love it

Money (or stuff) equals happiness - stop falling for the trap that you need things to be happy

The past determines my future - remember what you think is what you become, keep it positive

I will be ill-prepared for the future - Live in the present, now is all you have

Ways to reduce our toxic thoughts can include:

  • Acknowledge you have the right to feel your negative thoughts but that these thoughts aren't serving you and the positive life you want to create

  • You are your own worst critic so forgive your mistakes and let go of perfectionism

  • Get a positive thought stuck in your head - think a thought that reflects something about yourself that you really love and play it on repeat

  • Identify the triggers that send you into a shame spiral and come up with a plan to beat/avoid each one

  • Meditation and deep breathing can do wonders to ground you and bring you back to the present

"Man is not disturbed by events alone but

by his perception of events."

Epictetus

Here's to freeing ourselves from the mental clutter of toxic thoughts!

Please share with someone who needs a clearer mindset.
